Main Emergency Dept. & Accident Centre

It is a busy emergency department and a “Window” of the hospital & is supervised by Consultants/Senior Registrars (Department of medicine and orthopedic department). It handles more than 150 patient per day or around 3500 patients per month  (excluding peads Emergency).

An efficient Main Emergency Department handles all kind of emergencies including trauma. It has Facilities such as Central Oxygen, Central Suction, Defibrillators and Nebulization are readily available Stomach wash can also be given.

Chest Pain Centre      (C.P.C.-ED)

Chest pain centre is a unique facility introduced first time in Pakistan in Ittefaq Hospital. It comprises attack unit, Evaluation (Triage) unit, 3 beds observation unit, patient education area. CPC-ED is linked with community education programme of Early Heart Attack Care(EHAC) supervised by department of clinical and interventional cardiology.

Department of Medicine & Allied Specialties

Department of medicine forms the core of hospital clinical services and shares major work-load. Department of medicine encompasses specialties (clinical divisions) like Acute internal medicine, gastroenterology/hepatology, Diabetology,  Nephrology, Neurology, Preventive & clinical cardiology, Pulmonology, Dermatology & Psychiatry etc. Total bed strength in wards/rooms is approximately around 90(ninety). Advanced 21 – beds fully equipped, functional Medical I.C.U/C.C.U & 4 – beds H.D.I.C.U (high dependency I.C.U) is managed by the efficient staff. Medical ICU  / CCU has facilities like multipurpose invasive & non invasive cardiac monitors, pulse oximeters, functional ventilators x 9 (Servo Siemens), N.I.P.P.V, T.X.P, Percussive nebulizers, Defibrillators, Temporary & Permanent Pacemaker facilities, C.V.P line and full C.P.R facilities. Department of medicine supervises disciplined “Code Blue” System and “CPR Team”. Its operational efficiency and timely help has saved many lives. Department of medicine handles all kinds of acute medical emergencies and takes the major brunt at busy hospital “Emergency Department” (E.R). Haemodialysis unit with Bicarb Dialysis, unltrafiltration is run by experienced, trained nephrologist. Endoscopy unit is supervised by Consultant. Bronchoscopy services are provided by pulmonologist. Department of medicine gives round the clock support to all other hospital clinical services. Department of medicine & allied run specialist OPD clinics of all specialties on daily basis. “Diabetic clinic” & Hypertension clinic is also supervised by the department of medicine. Department of medicine is managed by whole time,     in-house senior consultants x 3, senior registrar x 1, registrars x 2 and medical officers x around 20. Good teaching and clinical training is provided to F.C.P.S trainees by the approved C.P.S.P supervisors. Department of medicine is recognized by C.P.S.P for F.C.P.S Part – II training.

 

Code blue call system

The hospital has a "proper" & "active" round the clock, emergency "Code Blue" call system to facilitate (with C.P.R.) and stabilize all patients in critical conditions. This facility is supervised and practiced successfully by the department of Medicine and Anaesthesia. There is weekly Code-Blue "drill" to check the system functioning in the hospital. Ittefaq Hospital is rightly proud of this service.

Endoscopy and Gastroscopy

Various medical procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic upper GIT Endoscopy, Sclerotherapy and Banding, Oesophageal Dialatation, Endocrine studies,  Diagnostic and therapeutic Colonoscopy etc. are carried out in this department. Liver biopsies are performed by both in-house and visiting consultants (Gastroentrologist).

Nephrology & Haemodialysis Service  (Renal Transplant Team)  

Supervised by highly experienced Consultant  Nephrologist

Bicarbonate Haemodialysis service with latest advanced computerized machines has been established for timely dialysis of kidney patients who are in a serious condition. An expert Nephrologist and his staff ensures that Haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, CAPD, and Ultrafilterations are carried out effectively.

 Dialysis Unit:   Eight (8) beds with new machines and fully trained staff are available for dialysis at a time.
It functions round the clock.

Sleep Study Lab

This dept. has recently been established to study sleep disorders, breathing problems (Apnoea) and cardiac rhythm disorders.

Department of Adult Clinical & Interventional Cardiology

Ittefaq Cardiac Centre (ICC)

ICC came into being in the fall of 2003 as part of the Ittefaq Hospital policy of providing state of the art care to the cardiac patients. It is a totally brand new centre which is built on the 2nd floor of the main building of the Ittefaq Hospital. It aims to provide fully integrated clinical and interventional cardiology services under one roof with economy of movement for the patients. It has three major divisions:

1. Adult Clinical & Interventional cardiology

2. Paediatric Clinical & Interventional Cardiology

3. Cardiac Surgery Services

The Adult Cardiac Care team includes Adult Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, one cardiologist and 6 adult cardiac registrars. There is one consultant paediatric cardiologist to look after the cardiac needs of children. The adult consultant interventional cardiologist is fully qualified and has worked for 14 years in U.K and 8 years in Saudi Arabia.

The services provided in the cardiac centre are as follows:

Chest Pain Centre (CPC):

The chest pain patients presenting to CPC would get fast and efficient diagnosis and management in the C.P.C(fast tracking) before admission in the CCU.

CCU:

It is brand new 9-bedded unit with facilities for bed-side monitoring (both non-invasive and invasive). The bed-side monitors are linked to a central monitor for prompt arrhythmia detection and its treatment.

Cardiac Out Patients:

This new purpose built unit has a reception and consulting rooms. The outstanding feature is its integration with non-invasive and invasive diagnostic facilities on the same floor.

Cardiac Cath Lab:

This brand new unit has latest TOSHIBA INFINIX/CSI  Cath Lab machine for diagnostic and interventional procedures (PTCA, Stenting etc) the distinguishing features include:

1. Dedicated haemodynamic monitoring system(PRUKA Mac Lab 2000)

2. Close Circuit television(CCT) link to the conference room for live transmission of cardiac procedures. It has a great education value for students and doctors.

3. Activated Clotting Time (ACT ) machine for proper anticoagulation’s during PCI/PTCA.

4. Blood gas analyzer

5. Intra Aortic Balloon Pump(IABP).

 

ECHO Lab:

The centre has acquired the latest NEMIO-30 fully digital TOSHIBA Echo machine which would provide state of the art echo pictures for transthoracic (TTE) and transoesophageal (TEE) studies. The outstanding features include:

1. Video disk CD recorder for image storage on normal CD’s and still images on colour printer.

2. Stress Echo Model UDSE-550 A for stress Echocardiography.

3. Multi plane TEE  probe. The excellent picture acquisition would result in improved diagnosis and patient care.

Holter Monitoring:

The latest Holter monitor HOLCARD 24 W (PC compatible with flash card) would provide service for arrhythmia detection as an out-patient for patients with history of palpitations and syncope.

Ambulatory B.P. Monitoring:

This is another outstanding service for cardiac patients who need tight B.P control.

Exercise Stress Test:

This is performed on Quinton Stress Machine with consistently reliable results.

Department Of Cardio thoracic Surgery 

A state of the art Cardio vascular/thoracic Centre with brand new most modern Heart lung machines, Hypothermia, cell saver, invasive monitoring equipment for intensive care is established under the able supervision of  qualified and well experienced team headed by fully qualified and well experienced consultant cardio vascular and cardio thoracic surgeon. Who will perform all kinds of open heart surgeries including by-pass surgery and thoracic operations. This service is available round the clock.

Department Of Surgery & Allied Specialties

The surgical department consists of seven (7) major operating-theatres, pre-operative and postoperative wards, two (2) full time in-house consultants, a consultant urologist & a consultant paediatric surgeon, visiting consultants, and diligent staff sharing the work. All types of surgeries including general surgery, Laparoscopic surgery, Vascular surgery, Gut and Liver surgery, Cancer surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic, Cosmetic and Plastic surgeries are performed on a regular basis. Advanced surgeries, e.g. Cardiovascular surgery are performed by respective senior surgeons.

Dept. of Urology / Renal Transplantation

Department of Urology carries out a wide variety of urological procedures including Endomotology, Paediatric and Reconstructive Urology as well as General Urology.

All urological procedures, including interventional and renal transplants are performed by a qualified and experienced Consultant Urologist. Minimally invasive urology procedures like ureterscopy and lithoclast to treat ureteric stones

E.N.T Clinic

Advanced E.N.T surgery, especially, middle-ear surgery, including tympanoplastics, radial mastoidectries and stapedectroy are regularly carried out.

Breast Clinic: (Mammography)

A comprehensive breast care facility is also available at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust). Patients are being accessed by a qualified experienced female consultant surgeon.

First of its kind in Asia, Ultra Fine Computerized Mammography and Guided needle biopsy unit.
Detection of breast tumours of upto "1 mm" and larger in size
without excision or incision biopsy.

Latest digital technology " OPDIMA " (Mammography machine) by "Siemens" is available in breast clinic which not only provides high quality mammogram but also can be used to take the biopsies with great accuracy. Early & accurate detection of breast Cancer is the aim.

Dept. of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery is headed by a highly experienced neurosurgeon. All advanced level surgeries, including emergency and elective neurosurgical procedures are performed.

 

• Neuro Surgical ICU

S.I.C.U have 4 -  Beds fully equipped with latest cardiac monitors, ventilators, central oxygen & suction supply. This department also has well trained nursing staff who manage efficiently the serious neurosurgical operated cases.

Orthopaedic and Traumatology Unit

Unit of traumatology and orthopaedic is a fully equipped unit recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental council and by college of physicians and surgeons. This shows that we have an experienced and professional team to look after our patients. There are regular compulsory courses and workshops for team doctors in liason with other hospitals to keep their knowledge and skill updated concerning patients care and management.

This unit has separate male and female orthopaedic wards with eleven beds each. Along with these wards, we also have a number of private rooms. Orthopaedic unit has very busy out patient department where over five hundred patients are seen and treated every month. Operation theaters are equally busy where more than two hundred patients are operated every month. The operation theater is fully equipped with two image intensifiers, fracture table, arthroscopy instrumentation along with different types of locking nail equipment.

Ittefaq hospital is the pioneer in arthroscopic surgery in Lahore where knee and shoulder arthroscopies were started. At present, we are doing 50-60 arthroscopies of the major joints per year.

Orthopaedic unit at Ittefaq hospital deals with a massive influx of accidents and caters for a large catchment area. There is a 24 hours on call trauma team which includes a consultant, a registrar, a medical officer along with a 24 hours ready theater and theater on call team to deal with any kind of emergency or trauma that lands up at Ittefaq hospital. Infact we are now a referral center for maltreated or infected long bone fractures. We are in the process of starting new methods of retrograde closed interlocking nail humerus, not yet being done in Pakistan. All other kinds of fractures i.e. hip fractures, long bones fractures and spine fracture etc are dealt with in this unit. There are many industrial hand injuries, which are taken care of by the trauma unit.

We have a large number of elective operations done at our unit, which include total hip replacements, total knee replacements. These operations are being done on a regular basis. Disc and other back operations along with congenital deformities of infants and children are also done by our orthopaedic department i.e. CDH, CTEV, postpolio surgery. Leg lengthening and callostosis is a special procedure done here for lengthening bones which are shortened due to disease, fractures or congenital problems.

There is a close liason between Orthopaedic unit at Ittefaq and plastic surgeons because many accidents have open wounds that need looking after of their skin and soft tissues.

We have a very efficient computerized data storing system along with strict regular follow up of all patients who go through our department. We have a regular morbidity and mortality check of the department. Our complication rate is comparable to any trauma and orthopaedic unit in Europe and America.

 

Department Of Obstetrics & Gynecology

 

The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is one of the main departments of the hospital. The annual turnover is around 2000 deliveries, 25oo gynecological operations and 14000 to 15000 outpatients. The department provides round the clock maternity services with CTG and Epidural facility for painless labour and emergency surgery.

In obstetrics it has five general and three private beds for first stage labour and two well equipped delivery rooms with three beds and neonatal resuscitation unit. It has an eclampsia room and two intensive care rooms. There are forty general beds and access to an equal number of private beds.

All kinds of gynaecology, oncology, infertility and laparoscopic surgery are carried out in three well-equipped operation theaters. The theaters have lates anesthetic machines, ventilators, data scopes, pulse oximeters, high quality lights, tables and surgical instruments for laparoscopic and full range of gynae pelvic and plastic surgery.

Our staff includes 3 regular consultants, 6 visiting consultants, 2 registrars and 14 medical officers. Dr. Farhat Rasheed is the head of the department who supervises the teaching programme along with other consultants.

The college of physicians and Surgeons has recognized the department for postgraduate teaching. A well-structured teaching programme includes daily bedside teaching rounds, biweekly departmental meetings, discussions, tutorials, journal club, lectures and fortnightly CPC.  

Paediatrics Emergency

This department deals with children who need care on an emergency basis. It is housed in a very spacious room fully equipped for "CPR" & other emergency treatment. Nebulisation facilities are also available. This department remains open round the clock.

Dept. of Pediatrics & Neonatology  

Department of Pediatrics and Neo-Natology  is a well established facility supervised by American board certified consultants with extensive experience in the field of pediatrics & ne-natology not only in Pakistan but in well known  teaching hospitals of United States as well. The department is divided into 5 sections:

 

1.                   Paediatric in-patient (Paediatric ward, Diarrhea section, ISOLATION area, treatment room).

2.                   Paediatric out-patient.

3.                   Neo-natal intensive care unit.

4.                   Isolation nursery.

5.                   Paediatric emergency

The purpose is to provide highly sophisticated and specialized care to sick children in all aspects. In pediatric out patient clinic we provide full immunization against all infectious diseases and at the same time community education services are rendered by consultants and other trained medical staff realizing the importance of prevention of highly communicable diseases in the pediatric community.

Neonatal intensive care unit is well equipped with latest incubators, ventilators, phototherapy units & paediatric cardiac monitors. It has a good temperature control system and is covered from all sides by blind glass.

The department is over all providing highly specialized health care in the field of pediatric medicine, cardiology, hematology, nephrology & gastroenterology along with pediatric surgery.

Paeds Surgical department is a part of the Dept of Paediatrics. It provides surgical support to department of Paediatrics & Neonatology. It is well equipped to deal with not only Paeds Surgery but also Neonatal Surgery. This department is covering all aspects of Paeds surgical sub-specialties including; Paeds General surgery, Paeds hepato-biliary, Paeds plastic, Paeds Urology, Orthopaedics & Paeds Neuro-surgery.

Paediatric cardiology services are available under the supervision of highly qualified & trained Paediatric Cardiologist. Following Paediatric Cardiology procedures are performed:

Department of Ophthalmology

The department of Ophthalmology has the facility to cater to all diseases related to the eye. Senior consultants carry out the most difficult operative procedures, like Viteractomy, with the most modern machinery available e.g. Argon laser, Yag laser, Fundus Camera, Surgical Operating Microscope etc. Keeping the future in view research is being conducted with the funds allocated for the purpose.
